It is funny where our thoughts take us. One morning I am thinking about what makes me smile and as I open the door a 20 mph wind kisses me good morning and I am reminded how much I hate the wind. Hate is a strong word and I really have a hard time saying it, (writing it is even harder). Even as I ran I thought if I just dislike wind, went through the positives vs. negatives and came to the conclusion that yes I hate the wind. The wind destroys my motivation to run. As I walk out of my subdivision toward the long and open country road that I use as my own personal treadmill a battle breaks out between my motivation to run against the dissatisfaction of spending the next thirty minutes of fighting the wind. I have weapons to help aid my motivation and I guess that is what I am asking you? What fuels your motivation? This morning the fact that I have a new pair of running shoes out numbers any amount of negativity I feel for my foe the wind. I also set rules for my running and the purchasing of new music from iTunes (which is an addiction). I have to break PR’s to buy new music so that motivates me to run further and faster. Marking a race on the calendar motivates me and speaking of that Mr.JK there is the Race to Wrigley fast approaching and was wondering if you want to duel it out. The twins motivate me to run for if not for them I would not have started running in the first place. When I think of the unfortunate people who are not able to run I run. Motivation is a tricky thing. It saddens me to see a generation that lacks it.

Motivation

Nice shoes daddy-o. Those are definitely motivation for a couple mornings. Music too. Although that can get expensive quickly. I listened to two newly downloaded albums on yesterdays 12 miler. Tommorows 20 could be expensive at that rate. Races are probably my biggest motivator -- that and fear of losing what I've worked so hard to gain (in speed and distance) -- Or gaining what I've worked hard to lose (in Lbs.). For the most part I find motivation comes from knowing how good I'll feel all day if I get out the door VS. how crappy I'll feel if I skip my run. I do hate the wind, and for those days, like this morning, I'll go to the Y and run on the treadmill, which I hate just one notch less than wind, and take it easy. Some days you just gotta sleep in, and that will bank some motivation for tomorrow -- cuz it seems like motivation is like money: it has to be earned, spent, and it will eventually run out.
As far as the Wrigley run goes.. I was just thinking about that race yesterday -- but I looked it up and it turns out it is on the same day I am racing in Dekalb. NIU is having a 5K. It's a charity thing through my running club. $75 for first place -- so if you really want to battle it out you might find it to be less competitive than a Chicago race -- well except for you gotta beat me and I'm planning on winning it.... Motivated? you can find it on www.NitroRuns.com
This has nothing to do with motivation because I have none... I was just wondering John, now that we know what JK means what does Panda Runner mean?
Cute pictures Jes!!!
Since my last run on Friday my enemy “the wind” has defeated me. It is funny how the anticipation of warm weather triggers the I can run tomorrow lobe of my brain. My hamstrings were very thankful though. At least the weather seems to be on the up and up so I get out of this rut, February was not a good running month.
I will look into coming up for the race in Dekalb. It will be nice to put another race on my calendar not to mention the fuel to start getting my pace times back to normal.
I know that part of the brain well. It has been quite over-active with the Florida trip tomorrow. Though I wish I woulda listened to it this morning before I tweaked my calf 3 miles into an over-zealous 10 mile tempo run -- stupid.
I wish I had a good story behind Panda Runner, other than I have loved pandas for some time now. I'm not afraid to admit it. I have one at home; Ling Ling.
Do panda bears make you smile?JK 10 mile tempo, 20 mile long run! I think I am losing my motivation to race you when all I churn out are 6 mile runs and the occasional 10 mile long run.
Pandas do make me smile, skunks too. As far as my long distance stuff goes, the part you should pay attention to is the fact that I injured myself as a result of all the distance. Actually it was more than likely having too many hard days (fast and long) too close to each other without proper recovery. I haven't run since that last post, though I must have walked 30 miles the last week around Disney. I'm ready for a real day off.
That's promising If you are into the occasional double digit long run. You are primed for a half marathon race... and most marathon training plans start with 10 mile long runs (though I do recommend a half first)
Glad you're still getting out there. The weather is only getting better.
later. JK
